Get your core CPD with our new format CPD Essentials events

by Mike Busby on March 18, 2011

The Denplan CPD Essentials days have continued to be hugely popular ever since our first event in 2007. Following your feedback, the Denplan Training team have refined the content and style of these days to ensure that we're providing you with the training you need. Dr Mike Busby, one of our expert CPD Essentials trainers, advises that the change in content was made to help practices meet GDC requirements. "Complaints handling and ethics are now part of the new look CPD Essentials events," he says. "This means that all four core subjects ’strongly recommended’ by the General Dental Council are covered in this training day, which is designed for the whole dental team."

CPD requirements

The following list shows the minimum amount of verifiable CPD dentists and DCPs are recommended to complete in one five year cycle in each of the core subjects:

  • Medical emergencies and CPR: 10 hours
  • Infection control: 5 hours
  • Radiology: 5 hours
  • Complaints handling and ethical issues: Enough to stay up to date

Attending a CPD Essentials day will give you 2.5 hours CPD in medical emergencies and CPR, 1.5 hours in infection control, 1 hour in radiology and 1 hour in ethics and complaints – so attending once a year would fulfil your minimum recommended amount in a clear, concise way. "It was a very good course," James Kelly, a dentist from Coalisland Dental in Dungannon agrees. "It was succinct and to the point."

Care Quality Commission compliance

With the Care Quality Commission stepping up inspection activity, Mike explains that ensuring your training is up to date has never been more important. "Attending one of Denplan's CPD Essentials days doesn't just provide you with essential CPD hours for GDC registration," he says. "Training in these core subjects also forms part of the evidence required for ongoing CQC compliance."

Exciting new content from Schülke UK

As well as adding a new subject to the events, we are also delighted to welcome Schülke UK who are sponsoring this year's CPD Essentials days. Mike says "Schülke start the day with a practical hand hygiene demonstration – so it's literally hands on! They also provide a prize for the voluntary quiz during the day, which tests you on key aspects of the training." The practical advice and tips have proved very popular with delegates who have attended the new format day. Dental nurse Kate Fogarty from High Street Dental Practice in Holywood, says "It was all extremely useful information that I can put into practice."
