X-Ray Specs! Quality Control in Radiography and Radiation Protection - Dr Louis Mackenzie

Louis Mackenzie is a GDP working in Birmingham and is a clinical lecturer at the University of Birmingham School of dentistry and in the postgraduate department at King’s college London.  He delivers lectures nationally and internationally on direct and indirect restorative techniques, minimally invasive dentistry and clinical photography and runs a series of popular hands-on courses.  He is a member of the editorial board of Dental Update journal, is academic lead of the University of Birmingham’s Master’s program in Restorative Dentistry and is the Head of Clinical Training at Simplyhealth Professionals.

Learning content

Interactive lecture providing an overview of radiographic quality assurance protocols recommended for the production of consistently excellent diagnostic X-ray images. 

Aims and Objectives 

By the end of this interactive lecture delegates will be able to demonstrate understanding of quality controls in dental radiography in the following subject areas:

  • Definition and importance of quality assurance
  • Diagnosis and management of radiographic errors
  • Quality assurance training and radiographic audit

Development outcomes 

This lecture contains educational topics that satisfy all four of the GDC’s development outcomes (A, B, C and D) for verifiable CPD and will help delegates enhance patient care by optimizing quality assurance procedures in dental radiography. 

The Systematic approach to Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice (incl CPR) - Katie Baker 


NHS Resuscitation Officer, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Registered Instructor & Director in Advanced Life Support,  European Paediatric Advanced Life Support & Generic Instructor Course Instructor (Resuscitation Council UK) Registered Instructor in Advanced Paediatric Life Support (Advanced Life Support Group UK). Previously an A&E Sister now has 26 years in Critical care attending in hospital medical emergencies as part of the ‘Crash team’.Katie has a particular interest in CPR in the community and following up outcomes and cause of arrest. She regularly teaches baby & child resuscitation and runs clinical scenarios and updates for GP and dental surgeries.

Learning Content

An ‘ABCDE’ approach to managing deteriorating patients has proved an effective method of recognising deteriorating patients in hospital. Now updated for community settings this presentation will take you through the recommended approach used by Emergency Healthcare Professionals and endorsed by the BDA.
Covering adult, child & infant CPR, defibrillation, anaphylaxis, acute asthma, choking, seizures, hypoglycaemia, delivering oxygen safely and recovery position -you will be updated in the current resuscitation guidelines, and also be an asset to your local community!


To provide an update on CPR and Medical emergencies, including the latest research from Resuscitation Conferences. 


  • Dental teams will be prepared for managing medical emergencies
  • Demonstrations of current techniques
  • Observing real life clips of clinical emergencies
  • Hands on practice with manikins & simulation equipment

Development Outcomes 

This session is intended to prepare staff for potential clinical emergencies in Dental practice, building on previous training and experience., and  meeting the GDC’s development outcome C & D.

Aims and Objectives

To ensure your team can identify and deal with professional, business and clinical risks and recognise the importance of their role in maintaining a strong legal and ethical approach. This course also covers the GDC standards and how the team can demonstrate and apply them in practice.

Anticipated outcomes 

For the participants to be confident in developing and maintaining a strong legal and ethical approach, as well as understanding the GDC standards to be able to apply them in practice. GDC development outcomes – A, B, C, D
