What to do in a dental emergency
In the UK
You can go to any dentist for help or advice and we can help to Find a Dentist close to you. The dental payment plans include cover for dental injury and temporary dental emergency treatment only up to policy limits. See the Policy Document for full details of what your plan includes.
Overseas
If you have a dental emergency while you are away from home, you can visit any dentist and are covered for necessary treatment up to policy limits.
Out of hours
If you are in dental pain during the night or at the weekend, you can still receive dental treatment as the dental payment plans include cover for call-out-fees and dental emergency treatment. See the Policy Document for full details of what your plan includes.
Our 24-Hour Worldwide Dental Emergency Helpline
Our helpline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is there to help you in the event of a dental emergency. Wherever you are in the world, you can call us for advice on what to do immediately and how to find your closest dentist in the UK.
You can see any dentist of your choice overseas. If you need help to find a dentist overseas, we recommend that you discuss your needs with your hotel concierge, your operator representative or any family, friends or colleagues that you may know in the area first.

Dental first aid tips
- Clean the area around the sore tooth thoroughly
- Rinse your mouth vigorously with lukewarm (body temperature) salt water to dislodge trapped food or debris
- Do not use very hot or very cold salt water as this may inflame the gums
- Do not place aspirin on the gum or on the aching tooth
- If your face is swollen, apply a cold compress and seek help from a dentist as soon as possible
- Cold water rinses may temporarily ease the pain from a throbbing tooth
- Avoid lying down as this raises the blood pressure and increases pain
- If a permanent tooth is knocked out, rinse it gently in water if it's dirty, and push the tooth back into its socket. If this is not possible, put the tooth into milk or saliva to keep it moist. Get to a dentist or hospital casualty department as soon as possible.
How to make a claim
Step 1
Visit any dentist of your choice worldwide, pay for your treatment as usual and make sure you obtain a fully itemised invoice confirming the treatment date, treatment type, and treatment cost.
Please note: a treatment plan is not classed as an itemised receipt to claim for treatment unless the 'treatment completed' column is clearly filled in with each treatment date. We are only able to pay you back for treatments once they have been fully completed.
Step 2
Submit your claim with the invoice on the employee portal.
Step 3
Your claim will be reimbursed directly to your bank account (usually within five days of receipt)
Top tips for claiming
- If you are receiving NHS treatment, make sure that it is clearly stated on the receipt.
- Complete a separate claim for each person, giving as much information as you can.
- If you're visiting a Denplan Discount Dentist remember to take the letter that you received at the start of your policy renewal and make sure you state you would like use the discount when booking your appointment.
