About your practice & domiciliary model

What inspired your practice to focus purely on domiciliary dentistry?


When we started (2011) there did not seem to be any private options for domiciliary dental care and the NHS Community Dental Service was already overstretched, with very restrictive referral criteria. We realised that many elderly patients who had always visited their dentist for regular check-ups and treatment were losing their access to dentistry when they became housebound or entered residential care.


Who typically benefits from your domiciliary service (e.g elderly, mobility‑restricted patients) and what challenges did these patients face in accessing traditional dental practices?


Many (but not all) of our patients are elderly and have health and mobility issues or a degree of dementia which can make it difficult for them to attend a traditional practice or sit in a dental chair. We also treat patients (of all ages) with anxiety, autism, agoraphobia and other special needs who struggle to go out to a surgery and may not meet NHS criteria for a home visit.

What challenges were your practice experiencing before joining Denplan?


As a new practice embarking upon a new type of business model, achieving a profile and recognition in the marketplace were probably our biggest hurdles.


What made you explore Denplan Essentials as an option for your practice?


Private dentistry is often perceived as expensive – it made sense to explore payment plans to help patients spread the cost and feel that they are getting value for money and Denplan appeared to be the most recognised and trusted name in that field.

What was your experience like during the onboarding process with Denplan?


The Denplan team could not have been more helpful. We had a fantastic rep who visited and got to know how our business worked (essential, as we are so different from a conventional practice) and helped us decide how much treatment to include in our Denplan Essentials scheme. We also had a lot of help with promotional materials when we launched the service. There was always somebody available to answer our questions and get us started. We felt we were being welcomed into the Denplan family.

Which Denplan resources or services have been most valuable to your practice in overcoming previous challenges?


Having a dedicated contact at Denplan who can deal with queries and advice has been very useful. The portal is user-friendly and makes it easy to keep track of our Denplan patients, as well as having a wealth of useful marketing, training and regulatory materials.


Impact on patients and practice

How have patients responded to the benefits of having Denplan Essentials available in a domiciliary setting? (e.g increased patient confidence or engagement with their oral health)


Mostly their initial response has been surprise and delight that there is a Denplan Domiciliary scheme they can join – some are already Denplan patients but can no longer get to their practice easily. Families of elderly patients are reassured that they can put in place regular dental care for their loved ones and patients are happy not to have lost access to an important aspect of healthcare. They also perceive Denplan Essentials as value for money by comparison with individual appointment prices.


What positive changes has your practice seen since joining Denplan? (e.g growth, improved efficiency, enhanced service)


It has made a big difference being able to offer a payment plan through a recognised provider. We can market our Denplan Essentials scheme as an enhancement to our individual appointment service. When we look for experienced dentists and dental nurses to join our team, especially in Kent, being part of Denplan helps our practice to stand out and inspire confidence.
